NATIONAL SECURITY Pew poll: Americans put citizens first

A new poll makes it clear most Americans oppose coronavirus funds flowing to illegal aliens, says an immigration watchdog.
The poll, conducted by Pew Research, found 61 percent of Americans do not support the federal government offering economic assistance to illegal aliens during the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the polling, 86 percent of Republican respondents and 44 percent of Democrats don't want taxpayers’ money to go to illegals.

Ira Mehlman, the spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, says the poll makes “perfect sense” when you recognize 40 million Americans have lost their jobs during the pandemic.

“They are deserving of whatever relief money is available,” he says of those unemployed. “And we shouldn't be paying relief money to people who lost jobs that they were holding illegally in the first place."

Mehlman says FAIR is pleased U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark) has introduced legislation that would prohibit state and local governments from receiving federal coronavirus relief funds if they grant relief to illegal aliens.

His bill is a response to the Democratic-led House's massive $2.2 trillion CARES Act. “The good news is that it's not going anywhere in the Senate,” Mehlman says of the House-passed measure.

But Sen. Cotton at least took the effort here to make it clear to Nancy Pelosi, and the House Democrats, that this is not something that is going to go without a response.
